CLAS as part of LAR offers a Supplemental Instruction program in cooperation with a variety of the college's departments. This program is designed to help students improve their performance and retention by offering regularly scheduled discussion sessions conducted by trained instructional assistants or SI Leaders. The discussion sessions are designed to:
• Help students master the content of a specific course
• Increase student competency in the learning skills relevant to the course.
For information about Supplemental Instruction please call SI Coordinator: Jennifer Emard (562) 938-4839 or visit the Supplemental Instruction home page at http://webenhanced.lbcc.edu/si/.
HOW DOES SI WORK?
A Supplemental Instruction leader attends class along with the students and schedules regular study sessions. The study sessions are informal and the students engage in discussions about relevant subject matter with their SI Leader.Attendance and participation is voluntary. The study sessions help students recognize key concepts, it teaches them how to identify important material in the text and in lecture, and the students are taught how to study for an exam and how to formulate possible exam questions. SI also helps students utilize useful study skills, such as note taking and reading textbooks
