HOW TO BECOME A TUTOR

A tutor must be a full-time student (12 units per semester for undergraduates or 6 units if officially enrolled in a graduate program) and have a 3.0 GPA in the subject area(s) in which he or she tutors. Final appointment for employment is contingent upon receipt of instructor recommendations and a copy of transcripts verifying GPA. Tutors may be required to work at both campuses.
If you are interested in becoming a tutor, please contact Chris Glover (562) 938-4669.

HOW TO BECOME A VOLUNTEER

We are seeking volunteer tutors in all subjects. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer contact Chris Glover.

TUTORING POLICIES

We hope the following information will help you with some of the questions you may have about tutoring.

  • Tutoring appointments are weekly. You have reserved that hour each week. Your appointment stays on the tutor's schedule until you let us know you no longer wish to come, or until we have taken your name off the schedule for excessive no shows (2) or cancellations (3).
  • If a student is a NO SHOW for the first appointment, they are removed and the hour will be opened to another student.
  • If a student fails to keep an appointment after having come at least once, we give him/her the benefit of the doubt and will wait to hear from him/her during the week. If he/she misses a second consecutive appointment, the name will be removed.
  • It is not necessary to make a new appointment each week.
If you are ill or need to cancel for any reason, please call the tutoring office and leave a message with a center advisor. The number is LAC 938-4474 and PCC 938-3002.
  • You may leave messages for your personal tutor with a center advisor.
  • English tutoring is being done in the Writing and Reading Center only, D103. A tutor may give suggestions on papers written for classes they tutor, but they do not proofread; this is part of your English assignment and tutor proofreading can make it difficult for your instructor to assess your needs as a student.
  • Walk-in tutoring is available when a tutor has unscheduled appointment time or when there are cancellations. Check our white notice board to see who is available.
