Challenge to Capcom: Part 1
Street Fighter is currently suffering from a lack of evolution. Counting the limited number of titles released from the flagship series it can be argued that Capcom lacks direction with the franchise. Capcom might counter that the Versus series has been very evolutionary.
The technology featured in the Versus series is not new. On the visual front the Versus series is simply a collection of sprites from one game crossed over into another. The sprites themselves are rarely ever new. The animations and controls are recycled as well. If Capcom is relying on decade-old sprites to support the franchise, sooner rather than later that strategy will fail as gamers move to newer titles.

Computer players have access to similar technology used by SNK and Capcom in the crossover Versus titles. The Mugen project founded by Elecbyte allowed gamers to import sprites from other titles, not solely fighting games, and add these characters to the Mugen fighting engine. Budding artists and programmers now have the opportunity to edit or create their own fighting game characters and add them to the engine. Players that are tired of waiting for Capcom to create proper follow-ups to Street Fighter can simply download the latest sprite rips from other games and add them to their library. There is a movement to create an open source version of Mugen that adds network features, solo and tag-team tournaments.
Every subsequent version of the Versus series released by Capcom or SNK only adds fuel to the Mugen engine. Why should fighting game players go to the arcade when those sprites are already available to them along with a 1000 more? The War is an attempt to change this trend, create harder-to-rip sprites, add online connectivity and tournament features in the first generation.
