According to the Entertainment Software Association computer and game sales were 6.9 billion dollars in 2002. On consoles the fighting game genre represented 6.4% of the market and 37% of the most frequent game players played online. In 2003 those numbers rose. Videogame sales broke $7 Billion. Console game sales were $5.8 billion and computer game sales were $1.2 billion. The percentage of M-rated game sales declined, but the percentage of T-rated game sales rose.
The ESA also reports that the average age of a game player is 29. Computer and video game software sales grew eight percent in 2002 and are expected to show strong growth over the next few years.
In 2002, more than 221 million computer and video games were sold, or almost two games for every household in America. 92% of all games are purchased by adults over the age of 18. The vast majority of people who play games do so with friends and family. (Almost 60% of frequent game players play with friends, 33% percent play with siblings, and about 25% plays with their spouse and/or parents.)
