Networking
The War will support network connections on consoles and PCs. The game will contain a step-by-step guide walking a player through the process of connecting to the net via an ISP. If I had any concept on how exactly to do this I would detail it here. But I don’t so I wont.

Servers
Network games will be peer to peer. Game modes and players will be listed on a central server. Similar to the specifications for the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater and Underground online games hosted by Gamespy.com

Customizing
Players can choose the match terms and player limits.

Internet
The War will have a Network mode that allows players to configure their game to play online. A player can host a game using his or her own machine as a server, once configuring it for the Internet. The game can automatically detect DHCP for connections and configurations. The War recognizes DSL PPPoE connections.

Gaming Sites
If I could choose one host for the online community it would be Gamespy. Their extensive support of the Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater™ series is impressive and I would like them to handle the War in the same way. GameSpy would provide the match making technology for the War.
GameSpy can act as a central meeting place on the Internet, and keep a list of all of the active War games currently being played. If the player starts their own server, then information about the game (its name, the number of players, etc.) will need to be posted to GameSpy so that other players can see it and join it.
There will be a message of the day, like in other hosted games by Gamespy. It is the first thing you will see when you play online. It is a simple message, retrieved from the War homepage, that lets you know your connection is working. The Message of the Day will change frequently; so keep an eye on it for information on upcoming The War news, secrets and events.

Persistence
The world appears persistent in The War thanks to the changes in the lighting, weather, opponents and time of day. Challengers from all over the world are welcome to start and host new games. Players that want a challenge in the middle of the night or in the middle of the day can find it online.

Saving and Loading
A player may not unlock any items in VS mode. If a player has unlocked a boss character then they can use that character against an opponent in the versus modes. Even if the opponent online has not unlocked that boss then they still have to play against him. The opponent will not be able to save the boss character in an online game, even if they beat them in the 1-on-1 or team mode.
Internet and multiplayer preferences can be saved so that a player does not have to reconfigure their game every time they wish to go online.
